Akoya pearls are usually referred to as the pearls that grown out from Akoya pearl oyster. They originally come from the coast of Japan. Akoya pearls are famous for their perfect round shape and their stunning strong lustre.
Since 1893, when Mr Kokichi Mikimoto successfully bred the first cultured pearl, the Japanese pearl industry has made great progress and created the industry standard with universal influence on the world’s pearl industry. Akoya pearls now can be cultured outside of Japan. Now, pearls that grown from the Akoya oysters are named as Akoya pearl regardless of its origin.
